Easy Steps to Scrapbooking with Young Kids

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

By Fion Lim Kids grow up so fast and if you don’t try to capture some of these wonderful memories through some means, they’ll all slip through the fingers just in a snap. And scrapbooking is a fabulous way to preserving those memories, by combining the photos and journaling of your kids. As parents, scrapbook pages of your adorable boy or girl probably fill up many pages. But these are stories told from your perspective. How about including your child’s perspective into those pages as well? Children have many stories to tell and share and through the shared scrapbooking experiences, he or she will have a mean of documenting those wonderful stories that impacted his or her life. Try scrapbooking not only about your kid, but together with your kid. As in combined forces and powers of mommy and kid. Your child’s views will certainly add a heart-rending air of innocence and specialness to those pages. Not forgetting that scrapping together with your kid is an excellent hobby to bring the two of your even closer. And you’ll become a tirelessly cheerleader and supporter, to encourage your child to grow his or her art and language skills. Scrapbooking also enhances the worth and sense of uniqueness in your kid. If your kid is still very young and hasn’t mastered the art of doing a basic layout, you can always do the layout while your child dictates the journaling portion. Consider pointing out a few layouts options and let your kid do the selection. The ideas your child has of how the page should look might take you by surprise! Journaling is important even if it’s just a few keywords or short sentences. This can be a fun session with your child. The creative answers generated from the little brain of your boy or girl are what make these pages special. By supporting your kid in expressing his or her own choices and thoughts, it’s a great way to inspire farther creativity in your child to want to do more scrapbook pages. You can choose a topic and then present it to your kid. “Bobby, would you like to do a page on your favorite toys?. Jeannie, would you like to do a page on your trip to Paige’s birthday party at the McDonald’s?” If your child is excited about the topic, then use a series of about five to ten prompts to get your child’s answers to them. Your boy’s or girl’s answers would then go into the journaling boxes of your page. If possible, it’s a good idea to get your child to write out the answers in his or her handwriting. Then another piece of your child’s uniqueness would be retained on the pages. The basic idea is for you to help your child scrapbooks the page, but the words would have to come from your kid. This would not only put your child’s originality into the page, but would let others glimpse into your child’s own perspective on the event or topic. Many times, you’ll realize that though the two of you experienced the same event, but would form vastly different impressions of the same experience. You may be touched by the loads of affection exchanged between your daughter and her best friend. But it’s how she finally had the chance to order her first Oreo cookies ice-cream cone, which left the sweetest memory on her mind that day. Having your child’s stories on the pages will reinforce the self-esteem in your child. How? Your child will begin to understand that what he or she has to say means something. There are some general prompts that you can ask your kids to guide them in weaving their stories: - What are your favorite ….? - Why do you like about … the best? - What do you like to do with it? - What is so special about … ? - What would you like to do when you …? - Can you describe …. and what do you know about it? - What are your likes about … ? - What are your dislikes about … ? - What have you learned from … ? - What have you learned about … ? - What do you admire about … ? - What makes a good … ? - What’s the funniest thing that happened on … ? - Where and how did you meet … ? - What do you do when you meet … ? - What do you talk about when you are with … ? - Can you draw a picture on … ? By combining efforts with your kid, and with little prompts, meaningful scrapbook pages can be achieved. In this way, you can capture the early growing phases of your child on those pages forever. And these scrapbook pages are bound to light up your kid’s and your faces over the years. “Discovery consists of looking at the same thing as everyone else and thinking something different.”- Albert Szent-Gyorgyi Happy scrapping with your kid! Vinegar: Ten Ways to Use It in Your Home to Save Money and Create a Cleaner, Healthier Environment

Monday, November 26th, 2007

By Avril Harper Its a far cry since the days vinegar was used by soldiers and mariners to stop food rotting on long journeys and to kill maggots and add flavour to meat that had already decomposed. Since then this common food additive has developed hundreds of alternative uses, many every bit as good as proprietary health, beauty and household products, meaning you also get to save money by keeping a few spare bottles of vinegar handy. * Beauty Care: Add a cupful of apple cider vinegar to the bathwater to soothe tired muscles and relieve dry itchy skin and sunburn. * Condiments: Make your own mint by gathering and stripping leaves from the stalks when dry. Tear into tiny pieces and spread evenly in a shallow dish. Cover with vinegar and leave for two or three hours before straining and pressing leaves lightly in a screw-top jar. Store in a cool, dry place. * Children: Make your own playdough by mixing 2 cupfuls of flour with one cupful of salt, one-half cupful of water and 1 teaspoonful of vinegar. Mix the flour and salt first then slowly add water and vinegar, stirring all the time until the mixture is stiff. Use your hands to kneed the dough. The dough is ready to use or can be brightened with the addition of a little food colouring. * Cleaning and Polishing: Remove heavy dirt stains from childrens toys and baby hardware, tiles and other heavy duty surfaces, by using a cloth wrung out of lukewarm water to which a little vinegar has been added. Leave to dry before buffing with a clean fluff-free cloth. * Clothing: Make your own fabric softener by mixing bicarbonate of soda, vinegar and water (parts: 2/2/4). Add a quarter cupful of the mixture to the final rinse for hand or machine washing. * Cooking and Food: Make your own red food colouring by mixing one cupful of beetroot juice (tinned or fresh), two tablespoonfuls vinegar and water to your desired colour. Bottle and leave in a cool place. * Health Care: In folk medicine vinegar is considered an elixir for a long healthy life and is recommended for internal and external use. Make a daily drink from one tablespoonful of apple cider vinegar to a cupful of warm or cold water, according to preference. The practice is believed to benefit the memory and to help the body fight many diseases of advancing years. * Ironing Disasters: If linen is badly scorched take a cupful of vinegar to which is added half an ounce of soap, two ounces of fullers earth and the juice of one lemon. Boil well and spread over the damaged parts. Leave to dry and wash the linen. Youll find the stain has completely disappeared. * Smells: Make your own air spray by mixing two cupfuls of white vinegar with one cupful of crushed herbs, choosing from rosemary, lavender, cloves, thyme or pine needles. Place the ingredients in a saucepan and boil gently for ten minutes then leave to cool. Pour into a large jar with close-fitting lid. Leave to stand for three or four weeks. Strain and add the mixture to a spray container or atomiser. Use in the same way as commercial air sprays. * Stain Removal: Ink stains can be removed by soaking the fabric in vinegar for an hour or two before washing in the usual way. Depression Self Help Through Improved Diet - Unlock The Powerful Secrets Of Improved Diet

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

By Jerry Chantrill Depression self help is about eating and drinking correctly. It seems obvious to state it, but our tissue, bones, vital organs and brain are all made up of what we eat and drink. As the business computer saying goes, “rubbish in, rubbish out”. You need to find out what you SHOULD be eating. Find about your body type and the sorts of food you SHOULD be eating. The Chinese and Indians have been benefiting from such studies for centuries. Are you aware of them? A test : which are the best foods for your depression amongst these items, regardless of your body type: - parsley, almonds, fillet steak, cheese or mushrooms? Answer, best is parsley, then almonds, then mushrooms, cheese and fillet steak. Did you know that? If you eat the wrong combination of foods for your depression, will you know it? Will you be aware of the harmful effects? Has your psychiatrist ever advised you about this? It is very likely not. It would be wise to find out. Why not find out and make that important life change that could make all the difference to how you feel. Investigate the options available for taking food supplements and vitamins. Certain food supplements and vitamins could be critical for your recovery and avoidance of relapse. The relation between depression and diet is highly complex and beyond the scope of these pages, however, stated in very simple terms: 1. Serotonin (and other substances) is a chemical which facilitates brain impulses necessary for our normal functioning. 2. When we are under stress or depressed, our brain requires and consumes more serotonin. Depressed people have a deficiency of serotonin and hence need to produce more. 3. Since serotonin is partially created by eating complex carbohydrates, our body begins to crave foods rich in these carbohydrates. 4. People who consume a disproportionate volume of fat and protein expose themselves to higher risk of depression, since these foods can actually decrease the levels of serotonin. 5. When we consume sugar-rich foods or soft drinks we achieve short term satisfaction but in the long term we are breaking down the nutrients in our system which help us fight stressors If you eat correctly you will have more energy, you will lose weight and have far higher resistance to stress. Eating complex carbohydrates stimulates the pancreas to produce insulin. This permits the amino acid tripofan to synthesize serotonin, which is the key element required for combating depression. Amongst those foods with high tripofan content are turkey, natural yoghurt, almonds and sunflower seeds. Contrary to what most people might expect, a protein-rich diet does not favor a depression sufferer. Protein breaks down serotonin. Simple carbohydrates such as pizza, macaroni and cheese will give us a quick fix in stressful moments but are harmful in the long run. Complex or unrefined carbohydrates are desirable as they provide longer reserves of energy, containing high levels of fiber, minerals and other nutrients. Helpful foods include pumpkin, carrots, mixed grain cereals, breads and rice and tomatoes, amongst many others. As critical as “what” we eat is “how” and “when” we eat. We need to eat hearty breakfasts and if possible take healthy snacks all day, as if stoking a coal burner every 2 hours. Snacks may include fruit, natural yoghurts, almonds, celery sticks. Under no circumstances should you succumb to the vending machine, with crisps, soft drinks etc. We need to chew our food well, at least 25 times per mouthful. We were given teeth not to improve our smile but as tools in the first and critical stage of digestion, which takes place in the mouth. Our final meal of the day should be light and no later than 7pm. If we are depressed, our mission is to eat consistently in order to generate serotonin evenly throughout the day. If we eat a bacon sandwich for breakfast at 7.30am, skip lunch, eat a double slice of salami pizza at 5pm and have a large dinner with dessert at 10pm before going to bed at 10.30, we are making ourselves direct candidates for obesity, heart disease, cancer, recurring depression and other mental illnesses. In addition to greatly improving what, when and how we eat, there is growing evidence that natural substances help to relieve the symptoms of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and mania. The most highly regarded is St John’s Wort. There is also a growing body of evidence demonstrating that foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids can have as useful an effect on anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder than antidepressant medicines themselves. Omega-3 is available in many common foodstuffs Here we can also mention lithium or lithium carbonate. Lithium is used in the treatment of bipolar depression (manic depression). Although lithium in most countries is a controlled drug, lithium carbonate is the substance actually extracted from the ground so in the strict sense it is a natural compound. It successfully helps to control the peaks and troughs of manic depression and is therapeutic in approximately 50% of patients. Fly Fishing

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

By Steve Valentino Fly Fishing is an ancient method of fishing that is effective for catching salmonids such as trout and salmon. Fly-fishing for trout is usually best in ponds, small streams, rivers and lakes. Fly-fishing is unique because unlike other fishing methods, artificial flies made by tying feathers, fur, foam, yarn or other similar materials are tied onto a hook as bait. You can learn how to tie these flies by researching the subject online or by talking with people who have done it before. One of the most passionate sports among anglers, there are two forms of fly-fishing - dry fly fishing and wet fly fishing. Of the two, dry fly fishing is regarded as the more familiar and classic form. In this technique, the angler casts the fly upstream. As the fly passes overhead, fish will hopefully rise up and bite the fly. Wet fly fishing is further divided into nymph fishing, lures fishing and true wet fly-fishing, and all are fished beneath the surface of the water. Some of the widely accepted fly-fishing techniques are wet fly retrieved near the surface, deep drift, nymphs (lightly or heavy), wet fly swung and dry fly swung. Commonly used fly-fishing equipment includes fly-fishing tackle, rods and fly-fishing reels. Fly-fishing is popular in the western states and provinces. Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, British Columbia, Alberta, and California are famous for fly-fishing. In recent years, the popularity of fly-fishing has dramatically increased. Of all the fishing sports, it is regarded as the most tantalizing among anglers worldwide. Fishing provides detailed information on Fishing, Fly Fishing, Fishing Boats, Deep Sea Fishing and more. Understand the Changes You Will Experience After WLS

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

By Kathy Swann If you are a severely overweight person and considering Weight Loss Surgery (WLS), understand that it will take hard work and an adjustment to your daily routine in order to successfully lose weight. You will have to adapt to a completely new lifestyle and change the way you eat, what you eat and how you eat every day. During WLS your stomach will be reconstructed into a much smaller pouch, so you will not be able to consume large quantities of food anymore without getting sick. If youve been a sugar lover, you most likely will have to give up this habit because your stomach wont be able to tolerate it anymore. You will need to drink a lot of water every day and eat more protein. Instead of the three squares youre probably used to, you will now have to eat smaller, more frequent meals in order to achieve your weight loss goal. And, to keep losing weight you must make exercise a part of your daily routine. You will need to make changes to your wardrobe. As you continue to lose weight, clothes that fit you now will be too large in a few weeks, so you have to increase your clothing budget during this time. Dont forget underwear and shoes, as youll outgrow these also. To save money, consider buying at thrift stores or only shopping the sales racks until youve reached your goal weight- then you can treat yourself to the new clothes youve been waiting for. The most important adjustment youll make during this transition is how you see your reflection in the mirror. If youve been overweight for a long time, it will be hard to wrap your brain around the new you. You may feel uncomfortable accepting compliments on your new figure from your family and friends. You will need to stop thinking of yourself as obese, but rather as a slim, healthy person. And, the most important benefit youll see from all youve been through is that you start to enjoy life more than you ever did before. Congratulations to all of you who have successfully achieved your weight loss goal! It takes courage to make this life altering decision, and you should be very proud of yourself for pursuing your dream. Navigating the Skin Care Labyrinth

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

By Pamela Cronan-Maddox Most consumers give little thought to the recognized allergens, probable carcinogens, hormone disrupters and synthetic industrial chemicals that have been inadequately tested and yet, can be found in the formulae of our skin and body care products, shampoos, conditioners, cosmetics, perfumes, infant body care products, etc. These products line the shelves of high-end department stores, drug stores, specialty retailers, and natural health retailers. With media reports warning of the toxic soup most of us bathe in daily, the ugly side of the cosmetic and personal care industry is on the radar of consumer groups such as The Breast Cancer Fund, Think Before You Pink, Environmental Working Group, The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, as well as concerned physicians and scientists. The public believes that the industry is regulated by a federal agency that insures toxic chemicals are not added to the products we use many times daily. So, you might wonder, who is responsible for regulating the personal care industry and looking out for consumer health and safety? The cosmetic industry will direct you to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the FDA will direct your query to the Cosmetics Ingredient Review (CIR) panel, and the CIR will share all the wonderful research they are conducting in the name of safety for the consumer. The problem with this picture is the CIR panel is funded by the giant mainstream personal care products companies whose ingredients and products must pass their review prior to entering the marketplace. These well recognized companies continue to use known or suspected toxic ingredients in their product formulae. Of the FDAs $800 million annual budget, less than 1% is allocated toward regulating the cosmetic industry. Neither the FDA nor any other government regulatory body actively assesses the safety of cosmetics before they are placed in the marketplace. Testing for Safety? According to Darin Stechman, Cliniques brand representative, Product safety has always been a top priority at Clinique Laboratories, and is ensured through state-of-the-art testing methods. However, this testing, according to Stechman, does not include tests that establish long-term toxicity potential, carcinogenic properties, systemicabsorption properties or chronic effects of daily use. Instead, large, mainstream cosmetics companies focus their research and both human and animal trial tests on assessing pre-marketed products for only allergenic reactions and skin irritations. Beyond skin eruptions and rashes, emerging science suggests that untold numbers of cosmetics and personal care ingredients may be silently and insidiously promoting cancer, disrupting womens reproductive functions and causing birth defects. According to Susan Roll of the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition, one third of personal care products contain ingredients classified as possible human carcinogens. Hence, chemicals such as acrylamide (in foundation, face lotion and hand cream) linked to mammary tumors in lab research; formaldehyde (nail polish and blush) classified as a possible human carcinogen by the Environmental Protection Agency; and dibutyl phthalate (industrial chemical commonly found in perfume and hair spray) known to damage the liver, kidney and reproductive systems, disrupt hormonal processes and increase breast cancer risk, are widely used by mainstream skin care and cosmetics manufacturers. Known by hundreds of long, intimidating chemical names, these ingredients are in the products we use in our daily personal care rituals. Its the daily grooming ritual that is of greatest concern. These toxic ingredients are absorbed by our skin and into our bodies. The cumulative exposure to a myriad of personal care products containing carcinogens, mutagens and reproductive toxins has not been assessed. The Ugly Side to Pretty Many believe that by purchasing products marketed as natural and organic from health stores, high-end department stores and other specialty retailers, they are guaranteed toxin-free ingredients. Unfortunately, major loopholes in federal law allow the $35 billion cosmetics industry to police itself, allowing unlimited amounts of toxic chemicals into personal care products with no required testing, no monitoring of health effects and inadequate labeling requirements. According to Janet Nudelman, coordinator for the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, The U.S. government, in relation to the FDA, has not been on the side of consumers and has not been on the side of public health. This is obvious since cosmetic industry representatives serve on government panels that are looking into the consumer safety issue they are supposed to be regulating. How to make Healthy Choices. Since the CIR is funded by the well known cosmetic manufacturers and the FDA allocates so little funding toward regulating the cosmetics industry, how can the consumer confidently make healthy choices when purchasing personal care products? Since 2000 The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a team of scientists, engineers, policy experts and lawyers, have dedicated countless hours examining data, scientific studies, and performed their own laboratory tests to expose threats to your health and the environment, and to offer solutions. Their web site, www.ewg.org provides practical information you can use to protect yourself and your loved ones. The EWG analyzed the health and safety reviews of 10,000 ingredients in personal care products. They discovered that there is very little research available to document the safety or health risks of low dose repeated exposures to the chemical mixtures in these products. According to the EWG, the absence of this data should not be mistaken for proof of safety. The more these low dose chemical exposures are studied, the more is understood that they can cause adverse effects. Based on their findings, the EWG has developed Skin Deep www.ewg.org/reports/skindeep, a sophisticated online rating system that ranks brand name products on their potential health risks and the absence of basic safety evaluations. Janet Nudelman, of The Safe Cosmetics Campaign, says she uses Skin Deep regularly to look up ingredients in personal care products to find the safety reading. Her decision to purchase a product is based on the results. In recent years, organic and 100% pure and natural products have become available from such companies as sukis, Farmaesthetics, GratefulBody, Affusion, Monave, Earths Beauty, Simply Organic, WildeWood Naturals, Munchskins and more. The health and safety of you and your loved ones is your responsibility. Read the labels of personal care products closely. If there are ingredients that you are not certain about, write them down and do a quick search to insure they are safe for use by you and your loved ones. Some Facts About Phentermine

Monday, November 19th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Kevin_Kennedy-Spaien] Kevin Kennedy-Spaien Phentermine (sometimes known under the alternative names of: Adipex-P; Obenix; Oby-Trim; Anoxine-AM; Fastin; Ionamin; Obephen; Obermine; Obestin-30; Phentrol) is a powerful weight-loss drug first approved by the FDA in 1959. In use for almost half a century, it has been a source of much controversy since the late 1990s, when it became popular in combination with fenfluramine, collectively known as Fen/Phen. What are the effects of this drug, and how does it act upon the human body? Phentermine works by triggering a fight-or-flight response. It acomplishes this by changing the Seratonin levels in the brain and releasing Adrenaline and other related chemicals. This can result in, among other things, heightened blood-pressure, a feeling of panic, insomnia (or, in some, drowsiness) and a loss of appetite. It is only recommended for moderate weight-loss and for short-term use. Some contra-indications for use are: it is known to be dangerous for people who are already suffering from high blood-pressure or Glaucoma. It can be addictive, and abruptly quitting use of Phemtermine (going “cold turkey”) has been known to cause lethargy, depression, and similar related conditions. Some other known side effect include changes in insulin requirements (hyper or hypo glycemia) as well as loss of sexual function (impotence). Love for You from Miles Away….

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

By Sean Carter Not having your beloved around specially on the worldly known date may make you feel sad and sometimes depressed as well. When your friends and pals around are planning the ensuing Valentine’s Day party with their partners you may feel crushing your head simply because you are feeling horribly lonely and aloof, then rely on the sole fact that you are also a lucky child of St. Valentine and will be getting your gift of Magi right on the day of Valentine. Many people celebrated lonely Valentine’s Days without their beloved around and they have choose many striking ideas not to miss their sweethearts as much as really they are. A lady spend her lonely Valentine’s Day wearing the shirt of her boyfriend and did not put it off until the last trace of the odor remains there. Another man spend his lone day cooking the cookies his sweetheart loved and at the end of the day ate them himself tenderly assuming that her beloved would have enjoyed them the same way. Trust is the base of any love relationship. Trust factor is the key of the bonding between family members, friends, husband and wife and mostly for a couple. When one is cherishing a love relationship he or she should never forget that it is all about missing, loving, caring and pampering your soul mate. Love is the biggest force to connect the minds together and days long traditions to send one’s love message to the beloved in a distant place is always been practiced with great care and tenderness. Such as sending a love letter and putting it to the mouth of pet pigeon is one of the famous instances. Another one was very popular during the age of adventure and voyages across the seas was writing a love note and putting it inside the bottles. In some cases these tricks often worked with huge success. Time has changed. Now a days the processes to send Love Letters and Love Messages to sweethearts are more easy and more certain in case of delivery status. There are few ways which makes your love smile on the Valentine’s Day in spite of the uncrossable distance between yourselves. STEP 1: Send a bouquet of flowers to your lover’s workplace (you’ll get bonus points for the public display of your affection). STEP 2: E-mail your mate an electronic valentine. STEP 3: Fax a photocopy of candy hearts with endearing messages such as “Miss You” or “U R Hot”. STEP 4: FedEx or mail a package of love. Include chocolate, candy hearts, a recent photograph of the two of you that your lover has never seen, a poem you wrote yourself (or a copy of an Cummings poem, for example, if you’re not the romance-writer type), a “homemade” tape including songs that put you both in the mood. STEP 5: Arrange for a singing Valentine to surprise your sweetie at work. STEP 6: Plan a wakeup call for Valentine’s morning, ensuring that the first words your lover hears on Valentine’s Day are either “I love you,” or “I had a dream about you last night…” STEP 7: Spend the evening writing a love letter or putting together a Valentine’s scrap book to send to your lover the following day. STEP 8: Schedule a phone date toward the end of the evening, perhaps sending your valentine some sensuous bath oils and a bottle of champagne ahead of time to coincide with the call. Topics of conversation? Use your imagination. When your partner is not around on Valentine’s Day it’s about the sincere, loving connection between two people, and the celebration of that connection from miles away. It’s a very unique, personal tie between you two. Don’t let marketers convince you that only their way is the right way, and that you must be together. You can be just as close, and just as in love, and just as connected, even if your darling happens to be away from you for this day. So remember the tune that you perhaps sang while leaving your beloved … kiss me and smile for me tell me that you wait for me hold me like you never let me go… And then raise a toast to the special love which is yours!
